“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
This is a powerful news clip (sorry, I couldn’t embed the video, but you can click on the underlined words to get to the website with the news clip) that was trending a few weeks ago. It stood out to me due to Malika’s extreme courage- courage to leave her father to pursue her dreams, courage to move to a foreign country to create a life and career for herself, and especially courage to stand up to her home country’s oppressive gender values. It would be easy for Malika to bury her head in the Hollywood sand, but she spends her time fighting for freedom from oppression for her Indian sisters.
